THE DIMENSIONS GUIDE

Football pitch dimensions

An 11-a-side football pitch is 90 to 120 m long and 45 to 90 m wide. Everything else — the area, the penalty box, the centre circle, the small-sided formats — is on this page. And at the bottom, what pitches actually measure: we counted them.

THE RULE
What Law 1 says

Football pitch dimensions are set by Law 1 of the Laws of the Game, written by the IFAB and applied by FIFA and every national association. The pitch is always a rectangle: the touchlines must be longer than the goal lines.

COMPETITIVE MATCH
90 to 120 m × 45 to 90 m
INTERNATIONAL MATCH
100 to 110 m × 64 to 75 m
THE STADIUM STANDARD
105 × 68 m, i.e. 7,140 m²
POSSIBLE AREA
4,050 to 10,800 m²

NONE OF THESE FIGURES IS “THE” SIZE OF A PITCH: LAW 1 GIVES A RANGE, AND EVERY CLUB PLAYS ON WHAT ITS GROUND ALLOWS.

Every size

Grassroots football is not only played 11-a-side. The reference sizes below are those published by the French federation (FFF) for small-sided formats, and FIFA's for futsal — other federations, including The FA, use their own age groups and dimensions.

Common questions

How big is a professional football pitch?

For an international match, Law 1 requires 100 to 110 m long by 64 to 75 m wide. Almost every major stadium settles on 105 × 68 m.

How big is the penalty area?

16.50 m deep and 40.32 m wide. The goal area is 5.50 m by 18.32 m. These never vary, whatever the size of the pitch.

What is the radius of the centre circle?

9.15 m — the distance every opponent must keep at kick-off, and the same distance as a defensive wall at a free kick.

How big is a 5-a-side pitch?

There is no standard for 5-a-side: centres are usually around 30 × 20 m. Futsal is standardised: 25 to 42 m by 16 to 25 m. Across the French multi-use games areas we measured, the median size is 0 × 0 m.
